Anyone who sells household appliances to consumers needs the legal guarantee notice since 27 September 2026, like every other trader. The GARAN label is added when the producer guarantees the entire appliance for more than two years at no extra cost. A guarantee only on the motor or the compressor is not enough.
Which labels do traders need for household appliances?
This covers washing machines, dryers, fridges, dishwashers, ovens, vacuum cleaners and bean-to-cup coffee machines. There are two official EU graphics:
- Legal guarantee notice: always. Since 27 September 2026, every trader who sells goods to consumers must point out the legal guarantee of conformity, online and in physical shops. The graphic is fixed and must not be changed.
- GARAN label: only with a matching producer guarantee. The producer guarantees the entire good for more than two years at no extra cost and makes this information available to you. Then the label appears next to the product and directly before the order.
Typical guarantees for household appliances: GARAN label or not?

Installation is part of the legal guarantee
With large appliances, delivery, setting up or connecting the appliance is often part of the purchase. If an appliance is installed incorrectly, that is a lack of conformity where the installation was part of the contract or the installation instructions supplied were faulty (Art. 8 of the Sale of Goods Directive (EU) 2019/771). This is part of the legal guarantee that the legal guarantee notice refers to. There is no separate label for it.
Energy label and GARAN label sit side by side
The GARAN label does not replace an energy label, and the energy label does not replace a GARAN label. Each follows its own rules. For an appliance with an energy label and a producer guarantee of durability, show both next to the product online.
One appliance, several model identifiers
The GARAN label names the brand and the model identifier. If an appliance comes in several versions, for example in different colours or capacities, and each version has its own model identifier, each one gets its own label. Frequently asked questions
The producer gives 10 years on the motor. May I show the GARAN label?
No. The GARAN label requires a guarantee on the entire good. The Commission’s guidelines reserve it exclusively for this type of guarantee. You may describe the motor guarantee, but without a GARAN label.
Does every washing machine need its own GARAN label?
Every model with a producer guarantee of durability needs one, because the label names the brand and the model identifier. Models without such a guarantee do not get a GARAN label. You need the legal guarantee notice in both cases.
Does this also apply to second-hand household appliances?
Yes. When you sell second-hand appliances to consumers, you also need the legal guarantee notice. The official notice itself says that the period may be shorter for second-hand goods, but not less than one year. Who is affected
Must the label also hang in an electrical retail shop?
