Furniture and mattress traders need the legal guarantee notice since 27 September 2026 when they sell to consumers. The GARAN label is added when the producer guarantees the entire piece of furniture for more than two years at no extra cost. A guarantee only on the frame, the spring core or the mechanism is not enough.
Which labels do traders need for furniture and mattresses?
This covers sofas, beds, mattresses, wardrobes, tables, chairs, garden furniture and office chairs. There are two official EU graphics:
- Legal guarantee notice: always. Since 27 September 2026, every trader who sells goods to consumers must point out the legal guarantee of conformity, online and in physical shops. The graphic is fixed and must not be changed.
- GARAN label: only with a matching producer guarantee. The producer guarantees the entire good for more than two years at no extra cost and makes this information available to you. Then the label appears next to the product and directly before the order.

A sleep trial is not a guarantee of durability
A right to return the mattress after 100 nights or a satisfaction guarantee does not promise that the mattress keeps its properties for a certain period. It is not a commercial guarantee of durability within the meaning of Art. 2(14a) of the Consumer Rights Directive and Art. 17(1) of the Sale of Goods Directive (EU) 2019/771, and it does not trigger the GARAN label. You still need the legal guarantee notice.
Flat packs and assembly
If a piece of furniture is badly assembled because the assembly instructions were faulty, that is a lack of conformity. The same applies if you assemble it yourself and make mistakes (Art. 8 of the Sale of Goods Directive (EU) 2019/771). This is part of the legal guarantee that the legal guarantee notice refers to.
Versions and model identifier
Furniture often comes in many fabrics, colours and sizes. The GARAN label names the model identifier. If each version has its own, each one gets its own label. If all versions share one model identifier, one label is enough for all of them. The producer tells you which identifier applies.

Frequently asked questions
Does a sleep trial count as a guarantee for the GARAN label?
No. A sleep trial is a right of return, not a promise that the mattress lasts for a certain period. The GARAN label is only for a producer’s guarantee of durability of more than two years at no extra cost.
The producer excludes the cover from the guarantee. Does it still cover the entire good?
That is open. The regulation does not say whether excluding individual wear parts turns the guarantee into a partial guarantee. Legal advice is worthwhile here before you show the GARAN label.
Do I need the label for made-to-order furniture?
Yes. Furniture made only after your order is also a good. The legal guarantee notice applies as soon as you sell to consumers.
Where does the label go in a furniture store?
The legal guarantee notice hangs clearly visible, at least in A4. The GARAN label belongs on the piece of furniture with the guarantee of durability, printed at least 95 × 100 mm. Print the GARAN label
