Watch and jewellery traders need the legal guarantee notice since 27 September 2026, also for vintage and second-hand pieces. The GARAN label is added when the producer guarantees the entire watch for more than two years at no extra cost. Whether exclusions such as the battery or strap turn it into a partial guarantee is open.

Which labels do traders need for watches and jewellery?
This covers wristwatches, smartwatches, wall clocks, rings, necklaces, earrings and bracelets. There are two official EU graphics:
- Legal guarantee notice: always. Since 27 September 2026, every trader who sells goods to consumers must point out the legal guarantee of conformity, online and in physical shops. The graphic is fixed and must not be changed.
- GARAN label: only with a matching producer guarantee. The producer guarantees the entire good for more than two years at no extra cost and makes this information available to you. Then the label appears next to the product and directly before the order.
Typical guarantees for watches and jewellery: GARAN label or not?
| Guarantee | GARAN label? |
|---|---|
| 5-year producer guarantee on the entire watch, free of charge | Yes |
| Guarantee on the movement only | No not the entire good |
| 5 years on the watch, battery, glass and strap excluded | Open exclusions not regulated |
| Jeweller gives its own 3 years | No not from the producer |
| Extension to 5 years after online registration | Open registration not regulated |
| Vintage watch with no producer guarantee still running | No no guarantee |
“Open” means: Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 and the directive do not expressly deal with the case. Legal advice is worthwhile here. The five conditions in detail: When the GARAN label is mandatory.
Wear parts excluded: an open case
Watch guarantees often exclude the battery, glass or strap. Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 does not say whether the guarantee then still covers “the entire good”. Only one thing is clear: a guarantee on the movement alone is not enough. For guarantees with exclusions, legal advice is worthwhile before you show the GARAN label.
Vintage and second-hand
Second-hand watches and jewellery are goods too. If you sell them as a trader to consumers, you need the legal guarantee notice. The period may be shorter for second-hand goods, but not less than one year, and only where national law allows it and seller and consumer agree on it (Art. 10(6) of the Sale of Goods Directive (EU) 2019/771).
One-offs and custom pieces
Jewellery you make to a customer’s order is also a good. The legal guarantee notice applies. A GARAN label is only an option if a producer gives a guarantee of durability. If you are the producer yourself and give such a guarantee, you name your own brand in the label.

Frequently asked questions
Is a guarantee on the movement enough for the GARAN label?
No. The GARAN label requires a guarantee on the entire good. A guarantee only on the movement does not cover the entire watch.
The guarantee excludes the battery and strap. May I show the GARAN label?
That is open; the regulation does not deal with exclusions. Have this checked by a lawyer.
Do I need the label for second-hand jewellery?
The legal guarantee notice, yes, if you sell as a trader to consumers. Second-hand goods are goods.
I make jewellery myself and give a 5-year guarantee. What goes in the label?
Your own brand as the producer, the model identifier of the piece and 5 years, if the guarantee is free of charge and covers the entire piece.
