Which labels do traders need for sports, outdoor and fashion?
This covers backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, jackets, shoes, clothing, sports equipment and fitness equipment. There are two official EU graphics:
- Legal guarantee notice: always. Since 27 September 2026, every trader who sells goods to consumers must point out the legal guarantee of conformity, online and in physical shops. The graphic is fixed and must not be changed.
- GARAN label: only with a matching producer guarantee. The producer guarantees the entire good for more than two years at no extra cost and makes this information available to you. Then the label appears next to the product and directly before the order.

“Open” means: Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 and the directive do not expressly deal with the case. Legal advice is worthwhile here. The five conditions in detail: When the GARAN label is mandatory.
“Lifetime” does not fit the label
The GARAN label states the guarantee period in years. Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 has no field for unlimited or “lifetime” guarantees. How such guarantees are to be labelled is open. If the producer also states a fixed period, for example 10 years, the case is simpler. If in doubt, legal advice is worthwhile.
Clothing and shoes
Clothing rarely comes with a producer guarantee of durability. You still need the legal guarantee notice, because it applies to all goods. Only show a GARAN label if there is a matching guarantee. Without one, it must not appear.
Sizes and colours
The GARAN label names the model identifier. If all sizes and colours of a backpack share the same model identifier, one label is enough. If each variant has its own, each one gets its own label. The Shopify app sets the label for each variant, and in the generator you create many labels at once by CSV.

Do I also need the legal guarantee notice for clothing?
Yes. It applies to all goods you sell to consumers, including clothing, shoes and accessories.
What do I enter in the GARAN label for a lifetime guarantee?
That is open. The label only knows a period in years, and the regulation does not deal with unlimited guarantees. Have this checked by a lawyer.
Is a free repair service a guarantee of durability?
That depends on the promise. A guarantee of durability promises that the good keeps its properties for a certain period. Whether a repair promise falls under this has to be checked case by case.
Does the label apply to fitness equipment?
Yes, the legal guarantee notice applies. If the producer gives more than two years on the entire machine at no extra cost, the GARAN label is added. A guarantee only on the frame or motor is not enough.
