Tool and garden traders need the legal guarantee notice since 27 September 2026 as soon as consumers can buy from them. The GARAN label is added when the producer guarantees the entire tool for more than two years at no extra cost. Guarantees that customers must first register for are still an open case.

Which labels do traders need for tools and garden equipment?
This covers power tools, batteries and chargers, hand tools, lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, pressure washers and barbecues. There are two official EU graphics:
- Legal guarantee notice: always. Since 27 September 2026, every trader who sells goods to consumers must point out the legal guarantee of conformity, online and in physical shops. The graphic is fixed and must not be changed.
- GARAN label: only with a matching producer guarantee. The producer guarantees the entire good for more than two years at no extra cost and makes this information available to you. Then the label appears next to the product and directly before the order.
Typical guarantees for tools and garden equipment: GARAN label or not?
| Guarantee | GARAN label? |
|---|---|
| 3-year producer guarantee on the entire cordless drill, free of charge | Yes |
| 3 years only after registering with the producer, otherwise 2 | Open registration not regulated |
| Guarantee on the tool’s battery only | No not the entire good |
| Battery sold separately, producer gives 3 years on it | Yes here the battery is the entire good |
| “Lifetime” guarantee on hand tools | Open unlimited guarantee not regulated |
| Guarantee extension for an extra charge | No not free of charge |
“Open” means: Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 and the directive do not expressly deal with the case. Legal advice is worthwhile here. The five conditions in detail: When the GARAN label is mandatory.
Guarantee after registration: an open case
Many tool guarantees only apply once customers register the tool with the producer. Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 does not say whether registration counts as an “additional cost” and therefore rules out the GARAN label. Until this is clarified, legal advice is worthwhile. If the guarantee already runs for more than two years without registration, the question does not arise.
Do you also sell to consumers?
Many tool traders sell mainly to tradespeople and businesses. Pure B2B sales are not covered. But as soon as private customers can also order from you, the obligation applies. A shop that is open to everyone needs the legal guarantee notice. Who is affected
Kits and battery systems
If you sell a tool in a kit with battery and charger, the kit is the good. A guarantee only on the tool, not on the battery and charger, then does not cover the entire good. Check with the producer exactly what the guarantee covers and which model identifier goes in the label.

Frequently asked questions
The producer extends the guarantee to 3 years after registration. Do I need the GARAN label?
That is open. The regulation does not say whether a registration requirement counts as an additional cost. Have this checked by a lawyer before you show the GARAN label or leave it out.
I only sell to tradespeople. Do I need the legal guarantee notice?
Not if you really only sell to businesses. If consumers can also order, the obligation applies.
What applies to a “lifetime” guarantee on hand tools?
The GARAN label only knows a period in years. The regulation does not say how unlimited guarantees are to be entered. Legal advice is worthwhile here.
Does the label also apply to petrol-powered garden equipment?
Yes. The legal guarantee notice applies to all goods, whatever the power source. A GARAN label is only added with a matching producer guarantee.
