Bike shops need the legal guarantee notice since 27 September 2026 for every bike and every part they sell to consumers. The GARAN label is only added when the producer guarantees the entire bike for more than two years at no extra cost. A guarantee on the frame alone does not trigger it.

Which labels do traders need for e-bikes and bicycles?
This covers e-bikes, pedelecs, bicycles, cargo bikes, children’s bikes and bike batteries. There are two official EU graphics:
- Legal guarantee notice: always. Since 27 September 2026, every trader who sells goods to consumers must point out the legal guarantee of conformity, online and in physical shops. The graphic is fixed and must not be changed.
- GARAN label: only with a matching producer guarantee. The producer guarantees the entire good for more than two years at no extra cost and makes this information available to you. Then the label appears next to the product and directly before the order.
Typical guarantees for e-bikes and bicycles: GARAN label or not?
| Guarantee | GARAN label? |
|---|---|
| 3-year producer guarantee on the entire e-bike, free of charge | Yes |
| 10-year guarantee on the frame only | No not the entire good |
| Guarantee on the motor or battery only | No not the entire good |
| Battery sold separately, producer gives 3 years on the battery | Yes here the battery is the entire good |
| “Lifetime” frame guarantee | No not the entire good |
| Guarantee only valid with an annual service at a specialist workshop | Open conditions not regulated |
“Open” means: Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 and the directive do not expressly deal with the case. Legal advice is worthwhile here. The five conditions in detail: When the GARAN label is mandatory.
Bike or part: what “the entire good” means
Whether a guarantee covers the entire good depends on what you sell. With a complete e-bike, the whole bike is the good, and a guarantee only on the frame, motor or battery is not enough. If you sell the battery or the frame on its own, that part is the good. If the producer gives more than two years on it at no extra cost, the GARAN label belongs with that product.
Used bikes and returned lease bikes
Used bikes are goods too. If you sell them to consumers, you need the legal guarantee notice. The period may be shorter for second-hand goods, but not less than one year, and only where national law allows it and seller and consumer agree on it (Art. 10(6) of the Sale of Goods Directive (EU) 2019/771). If a producer guarantee is still running, check the five conditions as you would for a new bike. More under Who is affected.
In the shop and in the workshop
Many bike shops sell online and in store. In the shop, the legal guarantee notice hangs as a poster of at least A4, for example next to the checkout. If a bike with a guarantee of durability is on display in the shop, the GARAN label belongs on the bike, printed at least 95 × 100 mm. Print rules: Print the legal guarantee notice and Print the GARAN label.

Frequently asked questions
Does a frame guarantee trigger the GARAN label?
No, if you sell the complete bike. The GARAN label requires a guarantee on the entire good, and a guarantee only on the frame is not enough. It is different if you sell the frame on its own: then the frame is the good.
Do I need the legal guarantee notice for bike accessories?
Yes. Helmets, locks, spare parts and accessories are goods. The legal guarantee notice applies to everything you sell to consumers. A GARAN label only comes with a matching producer guarantee.
Does the label apply to bike leasing through an employer?
With leasing, the buyer is usually the leasing company or the employer at first, not a consumer. Whether and when the obligation applies depends on the contract, for example when the bike is later sold to the employee. Have this checked by a lawyer.
Which years go in the GARAN label if the guarantee runs for 30 months?
2.5. The guarantee period appears in the label in whole or half years.
